Coastal hotels

Staying at Burgh Island is more than just a coastal stay. The very arrival is unique, with guests embarking on a journey across the bay aboard the iconic sea tractor, a charming amphibious vehicle that traverses the sand and water at high tide. This initial ride sets the tone for a stay where the magic of the coast is both inviting and enchanting, creating the perfect backdrop for your stay on one of the hotels on Devon’s coastline.

Upon reaching the island, you’ll be greeted by uninterrupted panoramic sea views from almost every vantage point. The hotel itself sits proudly atop a cliff, offering breathtaking vistas of the endless ocean and the dramatic coastline. Whether you’re relaxing in your room, enjoying a meal at the Nettlefold Restaurant, a drink in the Palm Court Lounge, or simply strolling along the island’s perimeter, the vastness and beauty of the sea are never far from sight.

Due to its exclusivity, the island boasts its own secluded beach. Imagine waking up in your charming hotel room and taking to the coastline, sinking your toes into the soft sand, feeling the gentle sea breeze caressing your face, and listening to the soothing sound of waves lapping at the shore. For the more adventurous, the surrounding waters offer opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply exploring the rock pools teeming with life and excitement.

After a day of exploration, head back to the hotel for an elegant dinner at any of the three restaurants and witness the dramatic rise and fall of the tide with a stiff drink in hand and the smells of incredible food filling the air. Once dinner is over, perhaps a moonlit stroll on the sands? Or perhaps a dance in The Grand Ballroom where a magical island event may be taking place.

Hotels with Coastal Views in Devon

For your next coastal adventure, there truly is nowhere quite like Burgh Island. While the island itself is the main attraction, there are a few things to see and do nearby. Bigbury-on-Sea Beach is a beautiful beach just moments from Burgh Island, and in fact takes just a short sea tractor ride from the hotel to reach it, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. This beach is where you need to land to visit the island.

Nearby, there is also Dartmoor National Park. This national park is about a 15-mile drive from the hotel and offers stunning scenery, hiking trails, and historical sites. For a more urban escapade, Plymouth is about an 18 mile drive from the hotel and has a variety of historical attractions, such as Plymouth Hoe and the Mayflower Museum.

The nearest train station is in Plymouth, and the nearest airport is Exeter Airport. However, getting to Burgh Island itself is an adventure. The island is only accessible on foot or by the hotel’s famous sea tractor during high tide.
