Historic location

Burgh Island has a coveted history of lavish dinners, exciting parties and famous guests: a true Art Deco paradise. The island was first used as a lavish party venue in the 1890s when George H Chirgwin first built the original hotel: a prefabricated wooden house for his guests. In 1927 the island was then sold to Archibald Nettlefold who built the more substantial Art Deco escape it has since been known for.

In the Second World War, Burgh Island’s convenient coastal location allowed it to serve as a recovery centre for wounded RAF personnel, playing a huge part in British history. Today, Burgh Island is a unique location and a Grade II listed building showcasing incredible examples of Art Deco style in Europe. Many literary icons have also found solace on the island. Agatha Christie made Burgh Island her second home, in fact, writing two of her books in the studio above the Pilchard Inn.
