Nowhere else can you enjoy the rest and relaxation of the island’s privacy whilst also being inundated with a choice of fabulous things to do, see and eat. Renowned as an island escape and a central location for parties and incredible soirees.

To tell the tale, the island was first used as a fabulous party venue in the 1890s when George H Chirgwin first built a prefabricated wooden house for guests. In 1927 the island was then sold to Archibald Nettlefold who built a more substantial Art Deco haven that made it into an issue of Vogue at the time. By the 1930s, Burgh Island was considered one of the most popular hotels of its time.

During the Second World War, Burgh Island’s convenient coastal location allowed it to serve as a recovery centre for wounded RAF personnel. Today, Burgh Island is a unique location and a Grade II listed building showcasing incredible examples of Art Deco style in Europe. Many literary icons have also found solace in our historic hotel. Agatha Christie made Burgh Island her second home, writing two of her books on the Island.
