THE-BEACH

Pub By Sea

The magical Burgh Island Hotel sits upon coastal Burgh Island. Known for its fond partying past and eclectic Art Deco decor, Burgh Island provides an exceptional stay for the lucky guests who travel across the waves to enjoy it.

From grand parties to relaxing retreats, Burgh Island knows how to provide spectacular hospitality that stretches across to the divine restaurants on the island. The Pilchard Inn, for example, is a fabulous sea view pub and restaurant serving up delicious local produce and incredible seafood.

Feast at one of England’s oldest pubs

The pub itself has a rich history of nearly 700 years, dating back to 1336! The pub is known for its cosy atmosphere, traditional British cuisine, and stunning views of the surrounding coastline, making it one of the best pubs in Bigbury with a sea view.

As one of the oldest pubs in Devon, the inn originally served the fishermen who lived on the island and nearby mainland. After that, the smugglers and wreckers who lured ships onto the rocks began visiting and enjoying a pint and some great food. The Pilchard Inn has been a popular meeting place for fishermen, sailors, and travellers that happen upon Burgh Island for centuries, and now serves as one of Burgh Island Hotel’s onsite restaurants.

A coastal sea view pub

If you’re relentlessly searching for a pub with a sea view, The Pilchard Inn is absolutely your best choice. Nestled in the rocks of Burgh Island and overlooking the gorgeous sea and sands with sights of the crashing waves against the rocks. In the sunshine, expect to see golden sands and seabirds across the waves, and in the colder months, look out to a moody sea and expressive sky, cosied up and warm in the restaurant, enjoying your hearty meal.

The Pilchard Inn provides many vantage points to enjoy the sights of the island while indulging in a delicious meal. Toast to your first visit to the island, celebrate your tenth visit, or remark on the extravagant party you attended not too long ago at this incredible pub with a sea view.

Pub with sea view

The Pilchard Inn serves food Wednesday – Sunday and they do advise to prebook. If you’re going all out with three courses, you can expect to begin your splendid meal with choices such as fresh Pea Soup, a hearty Baked Brie, or a rich Chicken Liver Parfait Terrain. For mains, the Roasted Monkfish is truly spectacular, served with asparagus and violet potatoes. The Cider Battered Haddock is another delicious choice, a traditional fish and chips dish with crushed peas and fresh tartar sauce. If fish isn’t your favourite, the Rump Steak is equally as delightful, served with skinny fries and perfectly crisp onion rings.

To finish, you’ll want something sweet. Luckily, the dessert menu is just as fabulous. Tuck into a traditional Banana Split (with one or two spoons!) and taste the welcoming flavour of banana, chantilly cream, delicious chocolate brownie and tasty flaked almonds. For something a little lighter, the Chocolate Mousse is perfectly fluffy and decadent, a contrasting partner to the Thyme and Honey Panna Cotta. However, if sweet isn’t your thing, a selection of Artisan Cheeses, crackers and accompaniments can also be served in place of a dessert.

It’s important to note that the Pilchard Inn does change its menus in line with the seasons to ensure they are always utilising the freshest ingredients. Please be mindful if the menus look slightly different to the above.

Alongside the delicious lunch and dinner menus, you’ll also find a selection of fabulous spirits, stills and sparkling. From crisp whites to bold reds and perfectly celebratory bubbles, the Pilchard Inn drinks menu provides plenty of potential to toast, sip and celebrate at this sea view pub.
