An Art Deco Bank Holiday Break

If you’re searching for a bank holiday weekend break that combines elegance, refinement, and adventure, Burgh Island is the perfect destination for you. Since its opening in 1929, Burgh Island has been a beacon of Art Deco wonder, welcoming the likes of Agatha Christie and Noel Coward. Every corner of the hotel tells a story, from its grand architecture to its legendary connections to literature, theatre, and glamour, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of legends past.

Designed and built in 1929 by architect Matthew Dawson, the hotel became an iconic beacon of the Art Deco era, its gleaming white façade and streamlined architecture evoking the grandeur of an ocean liner. Burgh Island was a place for the elite to escape, where society’s most glamorous figures came to unwind amidst the dramatic beauty of the Devon coast. Inside, the design reflects the elegance of the period, with sleek lines, opulent detailing, and furnishings that capture the exuberance of the Jazz Age. From the intricately designed interiors to the stylish public spaces, every corner of the hotel is an homage to the beauty and innovation of the 1920s and 1930s.

Restored with care and respect for its heritage, Burgh Island today remains a living celebration of the Art Deco period, allowing guests to step back in time and experience the same charm, elegance, and allure that captivated visitors nearly a century ago. Whether lounging in the grand ballroom or enjoying the island’s spectacular surroundings, every moment feels like stepping into a piece of living history.
