Being a working tidal island means that we understand the effect of man on the environment and the environment on man. Everything but the native plants on the Island has come or arrives over the beach and appreciation of the tides, the wind and the seas is inherent. For our guests, it is a peaceful and organic flow, for the staff at Burgh Island working with the tides and the seasons is second nature.
Burgh Island was one of the pioneers of the
Green Tourism movement and continues to
be
an early adopter of
sound environmental practice.
The Island itself is contained in the micro-climate of the “English Riviera”. Cooling sea breezes mean that the summers are still fresh, winter storms add drama and romance. We hope that this natural environment will allow you to refresh, relax and enjoy the
other inhabitants of the Island: pods of dolphins and solitary seals play in the Bay; surfers of every variety use the beach daily; numerous rare birds shelter and breed here; our rabbit
population is kept
in only
moderate
check;
badgers
and
foxes play
on
the higher
slopes
and ghosts
roam
free.
